Inspiration for art is all around the Cambridge resident, but it’s not stereotypical things like flowers and smiling children. Kelly’s installation at the Institute of Contemporary Art last winter traced the movement of furniture in her parent’s house as they divorced.
“It was about the disintegration of a relationship,” she says. “All of my work comes from just thinking about what’s going on in my life and trying to make sense of it.”
Her latest work concerns the transformation of her friends into brides. “It seems like every weekend it’s one wedding or another,” she says. “I’ve spent a lot of time helping friends pick out dresses and going to fittings. But then I realized the day came and I didn’t even notice what they wore. They’d become iconic in this weird way. It freaked me out a little.”
