Buzzing With Envy
By skirtboston, Monday, November 24, 2008Don’t you love those creative communities where everyone is knitting their own clothes, reconfiguring bicycles so they don’t need cars, growing organic food, etc? They make me itch. I’d love to have a half-teaspoon of the creativity that hangs in the air.
Such was the case this weekend when I gave in to the invitations and found my way to the Baldwin School, where Design Hive (designhivemarket.com) has built a nest. It’s a group of uber-creative types that changes every weekend between now and Christmas ... it was hard for me to breathe.
First I ran into Tasa Kvistad of Tasa Designs, who studied in New Mexico, who had amazing, unique stuff:

Then there was Pequitobun, whose reimagined necklaces were made of fabulous baubles and trinkets:

And Keyse Angelo of Flauxy was there, too, with a table full of her signature bracelets:

But it wasn’t all about jewelry, either. A guy from Maine had some interesting magnetic photo frames, there were vintage clothing, clocks, and more nestled in the basement of the school. (My steal of the day was a vintage silk scarf adorned with a drawing of the state of Mass. including every town and drawings of little scenes in the borders, for $3!)
Basically, there was plenty for holiday gift shopping, with a bunch left over for jazzing up your outfit or filling your own stocking! Just look at this cool pin by Ducci Designs (duccidesigns.com):
Best of all, I got to catch up with the woman who has her finger on the pulse of Eastern Mass, Morgan First of MapBoston. You remember her from our October issue (http://boston.skirt.com/node/11236) where we told you about her cool guidebooks/planners? If Morgan’s there, you know the place is cool.
Design Hive will have the Baldwin School humming every Saturday until Dec. 20, so add it to your list of must-see/must-shop destinations.
