Noon - 7pm
Free to the Public
www.distilleryboston.com

The Distillery in South Boston will host its annual Spring Open Studios on Saturday, June 7th from Noon - 7pm.  (Unlike the weekend-long events in the past, this one is for one-day only!) This year's event will include work from over 40 artists, craftspeople, and creative entrepreneurs.  This year, The Distillery has organized a ground-level "Art Sale" and a "Silent Auction Exhibit" in The Distillery Gallery - both carrying the same theme: great affordable art.  In addition, studio doors will be open throughout the building, inviting guests in for a view of the various creative spaces.

The Art Sale will take place on the ground level at over a dozen tables where work will be on display and ready for purchase, much of it at a discount.  Also on the first floor, The Distillery Gallery's "Silent Auction Exhibit" will feature an entire show consisting of pieces with a "starting bid" followed by a bidding sheet where interested parties can name their price in hopes of scoring a sweet deal.  Purchases will be made directly from the artists, no gallery commission involved.

The mainstay of summer parties, barbeques traditionally require outdoor space, a grill, and cooperative weather. On Wednesday, June 18, 2008 Sebastians Interactive Kitchen in Boston's Seaport District invites the public to learn how to host a successful barbeque without the luxury of a yard or a grill-rain or shine. The event features an interactive cooking demonstration by Sebastians Chef Mike Fuller followed by a multi-course indoor barbeque with beer and wine.  Tickets for the event are $75 dollars per guest and can be purchased by calling (888) 563-8334 or emailing InteractiveKitchen@Sebastians.com.

"Whether it's cooked on a stove or in your backyard, fresh ingredients and interesting flavors are what really set the stage for a great barbeque," says Fuller. "With our indoor barbeque tips and recipes, we are bringing barbeque to the masses. Now even urban apartment dwellers will be able to enjoy fabulous barbeques all summer long and well into the post season, regardless of the weather."

The menu will include items that go beyond the usual staples of hot dogs and hamburgers. While preparing the meal, Fuller will share cooking tips and offer guidance on selecting wines that pair well with barbeque fare.

It’s Juneteenth, the oldest celebration of freedom from slavery. Let freedom ring!
How much truth lies in the phrase, you are what you wear?

From Thursday, June 19 through Thursday, Sept. 25, Dress Redress will address how and why our identities are so closely linked to our clothing. The exhibition, presented by the Womens Studies Research Center (WSRC), will include painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, and installation by eight contemporary American artists.

There is no denying clothings centrality in our lives. We cruise the catwalk, trick or treat, dress up and dress down, dress to kill and follow dress code, said Lisa Lynch, Exhibition Curator and Director of the Arts and External Relations at the WSRC. By presenting the myriad ways in which what we wear defines us, the exhibition aims to expand the dialogue about the formative and expressive nature of clothing for the individual and society.

Exhibiting artists include Aparna Agrawal, Candice Smith Corby, Maryjean Viano Crowe, Carol Hamoy, Sandra Eula Lee, Esther Solondz, Andrew Thompson, and Leslie Wilcox. Through subthemes as varied as religion, memory, gender roles, popular media, and environmental awareness, each artist uses clothing as medium, subject, or theme to challenge us to rethink clothings significance.

Some of the artworks in Dress Redress are worn, and others are unwearable; some are a stand-in for the human body or human experience, and others invoke childhood dreams or fears, but all address clothings capability to conceal or reveal identity.

For example, Aparna Agrawal manipulates babies onesies to represent our need to create conceptual shields of armor. Each tiny garment wears its own protection, from a hardened exterior, to a sharp shield of shells, to a symbolically powerful pattern. Artist Sandra Eula Lee culls identity from what we discard and what we wear. In her sculptures, paper, plastic bags and other refuse breathe new life as replicas of her clothing. And Andrew Thompsons Clothes Document is an interactive project that will reach completion after the exhibitions opening reception. Thompson begins with a new set of clothing; after wearing each piece, he embroiders it with the date. The resulting garment displays the clothings history and represents the connection between clothing, memory and identity.

Dress Redress is the WSRCs first exhibition to utilize the universitys indoor and outdoor spaces. Work by all artists will be on view in the centers library, salon, and Kniznick Gallery, and Leslie Wilcox sculpture will be exhibited on the grounds outside of the WSRC and The Rose Art Museum.

An illustrated, color catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

The Distillery Gallery in South Boston will come alive with vibrant works by four Boston area artists during "Marked Memory" opening on June 26th from 6:30 - 9:30pm. In works ranging from small to gigantic, from oil paint and water media to collage, each artist uniquely portrays a sense of time and memory.

Corey Corcoran works from discarded strangers’ albums, snapshots from his family archive, and historic photographs. His works, full of pattern, color, and collage, create a curious narrative.

Aimee Belanger’s intimate paintings are about absence, location, and the failure of memory. Objects are erased with broad brushstrokes, figures are silhouetted, and desolate landscapes stand still. Aimee works from imagination, struggling to remember and capture the feeling of spaces past.

Justin Augspurg’s large narrative paintings, based on mythology and personal experiences, explore the line between abstraction and representation. To Justin, “the story demands figures, objects and places, but the paint will never submit to the illusion.” He is always reinforcing the stuff of paint—rock and oil, earth and water.

Sarah Meyers also explores a sense of narration and abstraction in her paintings to evoke a sense of memory and emotion. Sarah uses paint to arrive at an expression of her feelings about life’s beauty and complexity, along with its sadness and finite nature. Sarah’s figures and landscapes exist on the surface as marks of paint and collage, both beautiful and ugly, bright and muddy, glittery and dark.

Corey and Aimee are both BFA graduates of the Mass College of Art and are actively painting in The Distillery. Corey’s work has been featured in numerous juried shows and publications and will soon be on view at the Kingston gallery, The Fort Point Artist Community Gallery, and in the experimental arts publication “Apenest.” Aimee recently held an exhibition of her travel works in Brooklyn, and has also participated in numerous juried shows throughout Massachusetts. Justin and Sarah hold MFA’s from the University of New Hampshire and have studios in The Maaco building and Joy Street Studios in Somerville. Justin, a fellowship grant recipient of the Somerville Arts Council, has most recently exhibited at The Roger Lapelle gallery in Philadelphia, The Delaware College of Art, and at the Mass College of Art. Sarah’s painting was a recent recipient of the national “Excellence in Art” award and is part of the Liquitex Corporate Collection. Her paintings were recently selected for the juried “American Summer” show at the Kingston Gallery and the “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” show currently on view at the Washington Street Arts Center.

The Distillery Gallery is located at 516 East Second St., first floor, and is free and open to the public from 9am - 5pm, Monday through Saturday.
